5G progress, Telegram’s plans and Apple’s new policy
Gartner: global revenue from 5G in 2020 will double to $ 4.2 billion
In 2020, global revenues from 5G wireless network infrastructure will reach $ 4.2 billion, and in 2021 — $ 6.8 billion. In 2020, revenues are expected to be 89% higher than in 2019, in which they will amount to only $ 2.2 billion, according to a report by Gartner, the world’s leading research and consulting company. The main share of revenues will come from LTE and 4G networks: global revenues from this infrastructure are expected at $ 19.3 billion in 2019, and at $ 18.3 billion in 2020. Gartner estimates that 7% of the world’s communications service providers have already deployed 5G infrastructure in their networks.
In 2019, investments in the 5G network infrastructure will make up 6% of the total revenue of communication service providers (CSP) from wireless networks. In 2020, this figure will reach 12%.
NYT: Telegram will release the first batch of Gram in two months
The New York Times reports, citing three investors, that Telegram manages to fulfill the conditions for attracting financing to its blockchain platform Telegram Open Network (TON). The messenger told investors that it plans to release the first batch of Gram cryptocurrency within the next two months until October 31, 2019. If Telegram does not fulfill this condition, investors have the right to demand the return of their money invested in the blockchain project.
TON developers expect that Gram will become the world currency of the Internet and will allow you to send money anywhere in the world. According to the presentation for investors, Gram will be the same decentralized currency as Bitcoin, not subject to any censorship or control.
In addition, Telegram plans to develop and launch a cryptocurrency storage service that all Telegram subscribers can use. Currently, the Telegram user base is estimated at 200–300 million accounts.
Apple will no longer be listening to Siri audio messages by default
Apple is making changes to the process of improving its virtual assistant Siri. Now, specialists will only get access to text transcripts of conversations with Siri, while access to audio recordings will be disabled. In addition, if the user still decides to provide such access, only employees of Apple itself, and not third-party companies, will be listening to the recordings, as it was before August 2019.
In July 2019, The Guardian reported that Apple has a program to enhance the performance of Siri, which will evaluate the correctness of Siri’s answers and activation phrase recognition algorithms. In addition, it turned out that third-party companies were involved in the assessment, and the records were accompanied by metadata, such as the user’s contacts, as well as his location and search history.
Nokia will release a budget smartphone with 5G support
HMD Global’s product director, Juho Sarvikas, who owns the Finnish brand Nokia, said that the company intends to release a budget smartphone that supports the next-generation 5G mobile networks. This will make 5G publicly available. He hinted that the price of such smartphone will be two times lower than that of its competitors — from $ 500 to $ 600. The gadget will appear next year.
“I think that many would prefer to give half of what other companies ask for their 5G smartphones,” said Sarvikas.
