Germany against instant messengers
The German Interior Ministry intends to develop and adopt amendments to legislation obliging popular instant messengers, such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Threema, to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and provide chat texts in a decoded form by court order, as found out by Der Spiegel. It is expected that the new legislation, initiated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Germany Horst Seehofer himself, will enter into force in 2019.
The rush of the German authorities is associated with the spread of fifth generation mobile communication systems (5G), because it is the message coding that can become one of the standards of the new network.
Messengers who refuse to cooperate with law enforcement agencies will be blocked in Germany.
Experts from Huawei banned to review publications in scientific journals
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which brings together experts in the field of electronics, electrical engineering and computer networks, has banned employees of the Chinese company Huawei to review and edit publications in scientific journals produced by this organization, reports The Register. This means that now Huawei employees will not be able to get acquainted with the publications before their official publication. Previously, they had such opportunity due to the fact that they were editors and reviewers of articles.
IEEE publishes more than a hundred of scientific and industry journals. The organization, whose headquarters is located in New York, explained its decision by the relevant US government regulations. But IEEE’s actions were heavily criticized by some members of the scientific community. They questioned the independence of the institute, which is intended to serve as a discussion platform for professionals, from the influence of the American government.
Professor Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey noted that this decision will affect the entire scientific community, in particular, slowing down the development of 5G technologies.
Russia has created a quantum phone for secure communication
The Center for Quantum Technologies at Moscow State University and the Infoteks company presented and tested the first in Russia quantum telephone ViPNet QSS Phone. The main advantage of a quantum phone is an enhanced privacy system. The network traffic between subscribers using this phone is encrypted using quantum key distribution, which is generated every minute. The phone transmits a signal only over a distance of no more than 25 kilometers.
The cost of a set of two phones and a server is about 30 million rubles.
The serial production of first models will start towards the end of 2019. The company plans to sell its device, first of all, to big business.
But as soon as the news hit the media, readers discovered that a similar quantum phone was being sold at Amazon and Voip Systems stores. The twin is called the Grandstream GXV3275 and costs only $ 229.
However, experts explained that the main quantum equipment should be considered a server, and not the phone itself, which may have an appearance similar to thousands of other ordinary phones.
Seoul will host a festival of unmanned vehicles connected via 5G
The South Korean capital will host a festival of unmanned vehicles on June 22, which is organized jointly with the Ministry of State Territories, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea.
At the festival, guests can not only see, but also ride an autonomous transport that exchanges data with the road infrastructure over 5G network. It is true that the range of the test ride will be no more than 1 kilometer. To ensure the safety of passengers, it is planned to limit traffic on the highway — two of the eight lanes will be given to the participants of the festival.
5G networks in South Korea were put into commercial operation in April 2019. About 260 thousand people are now connected to it.
