China’s attack on Telegram, Slack goes to the exchange and Huawei strikes back
Huawei requires more than $1 billion from Verizon for 230 patents
Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei and the United States continue to exchange reciprocal courtesies. This time, the Chinese company demanded that Verizon must pay the license fees for 230 patents. The amount that Huawei is requesting exceeds $ 1 billion, Reuters reports citing sources familiar with the discussion. The report referred to patents for wired infrastructure, Internet of Things technology and network equipment, which are used by more than 20 operator providers.
Huawei and Verizon licensing disputes became clear in February 2019 without the price specifying. But now it became clear that a geopolitical conflict could be costly for one of the largest US players in the telecom industry. Both companies refused to comment on the information.
Durov accused China of attacking Telegram
On June 12, Telegram messenger experienced interruptions. The creator of Telegram Pavel Durov called the Chinese authorities the source of a hacker attack on the program’s servers.
“IP addresses were mostly from China. Historically, all DDoS attacks against us of such a magnitude, which indicates state participation, coincided with protests in Hong Kong (which are coordinated in Telegram). This case was no exception,” noted Durov in one of his comments on Twitter.
The fact is that at this time there were protests against the consolidation of the authority of mainland China and the adoption of the law on extradition in Hong Kong. The protesters communicated among themselves mainly through Telegram.
4 years ago Telegram was also attacked presumably by China. Then it coincided with the strengthening of the fight of the Chinese authorities with activists protesting against human rights violations.
Statistics: sales through TikTok applications increased by 500% year-on-year in May
The popular posting app for short videos TikTok continues to follow its advertising strategy. In May 2019, revenue through TikTok applications reached $ 9 million, says the Sensor Tower report. This is 500% more than in May 2018, when purchases of $ 1.5 million were made through applications in TikTok, and 22% higher than in April 2019, when sales reached $ 7.4 million.
The bulk of buyers (65% or $ 5.9 million) came from China, followed by the United States in second place, with sales of $ 2 million or 22% of the total.
It is curious that although TikTok has 200 million users in India, 120 million of which are showing monthly activity, Indian users purchased goods through TikTok applications for only $ 45,000.
Slack reported losses increase on the eve of its release on NYSE
The Slack company, which is developing Slack corporate messenger and preparing to enter the exchange market on June 20, 2019, disclosed financial results for the first quarter of the 2019–2020 financial year. For three months, Slack’s revenue totaled $ 134.8 million, which is 67% more than a year earlier. The volume of orders during this time increased by 47% and reached $ 149.6 million. The company’s net losses increased from $ 24.9 to $ 31.9 million on an annualized basis. At the end of the fiscal year, Slack expects at least $ 590 million in revenue, which is 50% higher than the previous year, and in 2020–2021 revenue should reach $ 900 million, according to Slack report.
On June 20, Slack will start trading through a direct offering of shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker WORK. It is expected that investors will value the company at $ 16- $ 17 billion. Back in August 2018, when Slack received investment in a round of financing, the company was valued at $ 7.1 billion.
