The fight against Huawei, eSIM in Russia and the growing market of virtual PBX
The ring is closing in on Huawei
Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei continues to be under international pressure. After Huawei was blacklisted by the US Department of Commerce, the Android team announced the suspension of Google’s cooperation with Huawei, adding, however, that Google Play and Google Play Protect applications will continue working for users who have already purchased smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer Huawei.
ARM, Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx and Broadcom chipmakers said that they will no longer supply Huawei with their products until further notice. Separately, the termination of cooperation with the British ARM is worth noting- the company was a key partner of Huawei.
Microsoft will also stop providing Huawei with Windows updates. This was stated in the order sent on May 20 to Microsoft offices in a number of countries, including Russia. Termination of cooperation will affect consumer electronics segments and b2b solutions. Microsoft has removed Huawei’s offerings from the product catalog on the Azure Stack website.
In the UK, they postpone the start of sales of Huawei 5G-smartphone. Similar steps are being taken in Japan.
Meanwhile, Huawei announced that by the autumn of 2019 it will prepare its version of the operating system, which will be able to replace operating systems from Google and Microsoft. The first OS version will be released for China, and by mid-2020 it will be adapted for other countries.
The Russian authorities approved the eSIM sale scheme
The Ministry of Communications has agreed with the possibility of selling virtual eSIM cards and will prepare a regulatory framework for remote identification of subscribers. The eSIM sales scheme was proposed and tested by Tele2 at the end of April. Subscribers could set up eSIM in five Tele2 stores in the center of Moscow, first buying a physical SIM card, and then changing it to an eSIM package.
During the “Big Four” meeting with the Ministry of Communications and Telecommunications, a representative of Tele2 stressed that the first commercial experience of implementing eSIM in Russia was completed successfully, Kommersant reports. The pilot project has been completed, now the FSB is checking the functioning of operational-investigative measures, information security and cryptography on eSIM systems and will issue its conclusion soon.
Now, security officials are against the introduction of eSIM in Russia, who insist on introducing domestic cryptography into smartphones — every device imported into Russia with eSIM support must meet the necessary requirements of the FSB. The source is confident that “device manufacturers by virtue of sanctions are unlikely to print chips for eSIM with the domestic cryptography in Russia.”
Two orders of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media, obliging to identify subscribers of cellular networks using cryptography that meets the requirements of the FSB, will enter into force on December 1.
Study: global virtual PBX market will exceed $ 14 billion by 2026

Mobile operator AT & T started accepting payments in cryptocurrency
One of the world’s largest telecom companies and the largest US mobile operator AT & T in partnership with the BitPay processing service began to accept cryptocurrency for payment.
“We have customers who use cryptocurrency, and we are pleased that we can offer them a way to pay their bills in the way they prefer,” said AT & T Vice President Kevin McDorman.
Users will be able to choose BitPay as a way to pay bills after logging into their accounts through the company’s website or through the myAT & T application. At AT & T’s physical stores, it’s not yet possible to buy phones and other goods with cryptocurrencies.
